High Dynamic Range

Knowing that the weather was going to be fair, today I got up early and headed up the Long Mynd, South Shropshire to experiment with some landscape photography and High Dynamic Range (HDR).

HDR is a technique that allows your camera to capture details in both the highlights and the shadows in a scene. Normally, your camera can only do one or the other, not both at the same time. The technique requires you to take at least 3 shots; one correctly exposed, one under exposed and one over exposed. When you merge the 3 images together in your editing software you end up with a picture that captures details right across the range of lighting conditions in the scene. You are able to pick out details in both the highlights and the shadows.

Here are my attempts at HDR with these sunrise over Church Stretton shots.
